Angry Avril Responds to Rip-Off Claims

Earlier this week, TMZ reported that attitudinal Avril Lavigne's song "Girlfriend" was a rip off of a 1979 song by the Rubinoos called "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend." Avril's management flatly denied the band's claims, and now Avril's called BS too.

Writes Avril:

"You may have heard some news that two guys who wrote for some band from the 1970s I have never in my life heard of called the "Rubinoos" are trying to sue me. They have a song called "I Want To Be Your Boyfriend" that has no musical similarities to the song "Girlfriend" that Luke Gottwald and I wrote together. They claim that a small part of the lyrics are the same and are saying that I took these from them. I had never heard this song in my life and their claim is based on 5 words! All songs share similar lyrics and emotions. As humans we speak one language.

Off the top of my head, two other songs that I can immediately think of with this type of lyric are "Hey, hey, you, you get off of my cloud" by the Rolling Stones and "Hey little girl I want to be your boyfriend" by the Ramones. Simply put, I have been falsely accused of ripping their song off. Luke and I have done nothing wrong and there is no merit to their claim."

91. Avril has no respect for her own music- as seen in her lacklustre performances- so why would she respect anyone elses?

The fact is, the chorus of the two songs are almost bloody identical!

94. "Notice she hasn't made any statement on the claim Chantal Krevaziuk made about her stealing a song called 'Contagious.'"

Yes, she has, TMZ only quoted a couple paragraphs of Avril's statement. The full statement is on Avril's website. Avril says Chantal is just bitter about not being invited to work on the third album. Avril says she won't work with Chantal because nothing Chantal wrote for her became a "hit". (And we all know that hits are all that matter, right? Avril is corporate to the core, I guess).

The strangest part of the statement, besides that "hit" criteria, is that in the span of four paragraphs Avril goes from saying that she "forgives her" to that she is thinking about suing her.

So, if you thought Avril only acted immature whenever she had a new album out, that should clear that up.

95. Hey, jury of jerry, no kidding they can't pick out a melody! Scary....
I agree with the person who said it reminded them of that AWFUL 'Hey Ricky' song (now there's a song that should burn), definitely the same sort of idea.

96. Who knows what other songs Avril might have ripped off. This among other problems
is the reason why music sales has gone down in the last ten years or so.
We as consumers have a right to demand better from the record companies, the
producers and yes, in this case the artists.

97. YUP SHE DEFINATELY RIPPED THEM OFF. BUT I REALLY TRULY DONT BELIEVE IT WAS AVRIL SHE SIMPLY DOESNT HAVE THE INTELLIGENCE FOR IT. I DO BELIEVE THE PEOPLE AROUND HER DID AND SHOULD HAVE TO ANSWER FOR IT.

98. 'Angry Avril'...is there any other kind of Avril? She must be the dumbest person in the music business...seriously! Doesn't her record label have a handler to shut her up when she's taking down not only herself, but her co-writer, label, etc? She's just another tiny asterisk in the business. Those angst-ridden 13 year-olds have now moved on...time to headline at the local malls and county fairs.

99. Wow - I had no idea how arrogant Avril had become - "two guys who wrote for some band in the 70's". Not nice. She apparently spent some time googling the lyrics... off the top of her head.. oh please. She's hooorrrrribbbbbllleee. Finally, while the lyrics may have been heard in many different songs, if you hear the version in question, well, the MUSIC AND LYRICS sound exactly the same. She has about two years left of teeny bop fame... she better start saving her dollars.

100. The only twelve year-old girls that I know of are on here posting utterly stupid comments! Sorry, but with the exception of maybe four posts - you people are showing yourselves to be complete idiots! God I hope Perez gets his site back-up and running 100% so the morons stay over there!

I've checked out both songs - sorry, but no dice... please educate yourself on the actual issue at hand before you post - otherwise you are just wasting your time, and everyone else's. By the way, it's would appear to be a funny coincidence that this lawsuit is timed with a release of the Rubinoos Greatest Hits album... check out their website! (See post #73)

Funny how stupid people are such sheep! Avril should be writing a song about that!

103. I actually like Avril..she was fresh and interesting. I think she is attractive and she does have talent. I am definately the older generation and I have no feelings of jealousy or envy but I do believe that song was stolen and redone. She owes the original singers some royalty money. I hope she has a great career..she is Canadian and our country is proud of her but again..that song belongs to someone else.

104. The "Rubinoos" song is absolutely horrible.
Who in their right mind would want to rip off that garbage?
The beginning of their song sounds like someone drove a tractor over some bagpipes.
A very small part of the chorus in the Rubinoos song has a similar sound and lyrics as Avril's song. The other 95% of the two songs are completely different.
The lawsuit is a bunch of BS. But when you are a has-been that never really was, grubbing for dollars is a great way to get rich.

105. its not even the same song people these coryright infringment are getting out of hand.. when you copyright a song you copyright the whole song not.. a few words or a certain drum beat.. girlfriend is nowhere near the same song.. there are thousands of songs that use the same words and sound alot alike but their not the same song.im going to start copyrighting lines of words three or four per line and if anyone uses them im going to sue they butts off .. everyone in this forum is just mad because todays music sucks .. and everyone sounds the same.. all rap music sounds the same and use the same lyrics over and over.. get over it people.
