Angry Avril Responds to Rip-Off Claims

Earlier this week, TMZ reported that attitudinal Avril Lavigne's song "Girlfriend" was a rip off of a 1979 song by the Rubinoos called "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend." Avril's management flatly denied the band's claims, and now Avril's called BS too.

Writes Avril:

"You may have heard some news that two guys who wrote for some band from the 1970s I have never in my life heard of called the "Rubinoos" are trying to sue me. They have a song called "I Want To Be Your Boyfriend" that has no musical similarities to the song "Girlfriend" that Luke Gottwald and I wrote together. They claim that a small part of the lyrics are the same and are saying that I took these from them. I had never heard this song in my life and their claim is based on 5 words! All songs share similar lyrics and emotions. As humans we speak one language.

Off the top of my head, two other songs that I can immediately think of with this type of lyric are "Hey, hey, you, you get off of my cloud" by the Rolling Stones and "Hey little girl I want to be your boyfriend" by the Ramones. Simply put, I have been falsely accused of ripping their song off. Luke and I have done nothing wrong and there is no merit to their claim."

121. Phil-You missed the point. You may not care about her personal life but a lot of people don’t like her because of her behavior, not because they are bitter middle class people (which is what you said in your first post.) I was responding to you generalizing why people don’t like her, as was the case with the other post which I copied. Avril is not a victim of her photos or other behavior caught on video…if she is spitting and flipping people off…that is all her doing. If it were really the paparazzi’s fault that she acted that way, then we would see the same kind of photos from all celebrities, which is not the case. I wish TMZ would do a collage of Avril’s notorious finger flipping photos, so you could see it for yourself.

124. Other than 4 words - Hey Hey You You, the songs are NOTHING alike, the beat is different, the notes are different, the tone is different, the intonation is different, the melody is different, the second line of the chorus is different. It is NOT a sampled lyric. This is a money-grabbing lawsuit from a Z-list has-been band. RubinWhos? Yeah, check out their official website, looks like it was made in 1995. They are so hurting. The last tiny royalty check came in for next to nothing so they figured they could gouge a superstar. PATHETIC!!!

125. Yeah, a musician friend of mine listend to both, he said even tough the lyrics are mostly different, the chords are almost exacy the same. She should just own up to it, pay the band some royalties and move on.

127. Avril is just yet another participant in today's dominator culture. She's of the mindset that getting one up on someone else means everything. There have been numerous photos of her flashing the satanic hand sign, as many supposedly "successful" people including celebrities and politicians do. They think the point of life is to screw someone else over. Sad.

130. I mean... come on... If she or her whatever co-writer just HAPPENS to do this by accident cuz the Rubinoo's song was deep in the recesses of their brains, then Avril should at least acknowledge the similarities and say something like... I can see how people would find the chrous similar but when we write the song it was completely original and any similarities between the songs are totally coincidnetal... some sort of honest crap like that. .... the fact that she vehemently denies it proves that she is guilty.

133. This Avril Lavigne is as crude and as coarse as anyone can get. She publicly spits, turns her ass to the audience at the end of her set and generally looks like something that cat dragged in through the screen door. For once, I'm happy to say, she is NOT American; she is Canadian.

134. I knew there had to be some old guy behind that song. Luke Gottwald was the guitar player for the saturday night live band for 10 years. He's written numerous songs for "artists" such as kelly clarkson etc. It's so stupid that these young girls try to pass themselves off as songwriters when they are not even musicians. I think it would be great if they held an awards ceremony for the real songwriters of these songs. You would have a bunch of guys in their 50's performing the songs.
